  1. Add ¼ cup of water to a saucepan, four quarts, over medium heat. Add the first 10 ingredients to the pot. Bring the bean mixture to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low and cook for about 10 minutes over low heat or until flavors blend. Discard the bay leaf, and season the beans with the marinade.
  2. Serve the beans evenly on serving plates. Serve the cooked rice as a side dish, along with the beans.
